The city of Hatria was situated between Petruziani and Vestini, where Piceno ended. Reached by Salaria way, it had a big expansion during the ancient Rome.

In 1251 it got Episcopal seat and in 1395 it became feudal property of the potent and famous Acquaviva’s family, which kept it until 1775.

The most important church of this town is the Cathedral. Inside we can find some roman mosaics that likely adorned the ancient thermal baths, Sant’Anna’s chapel and some frescos by Andrea de Litio, representing evangelical histories: this is the most important pictorial cycle of Abruzzo’s Renaissance painted in 1481.

 

 

 

 

 

In the crypt there are some medieval sculptural fragments, only rest of the primitive structure. Under the Dome it is possible to visit the roman cistern, adorned by frescoes.

 

 

The Capitular Museum, within the Dome, collects ancient furniture, goldsmith’s works, holy vestments, pictures, sculptures, codex, reliquaries and 140 ceramics made in Castelli.

 

 

 

 

Some other important churches are S.Francesco and S.Agostino, which are medieval and restored in Renaissance and Baroque Age. In S.Agostino church we point out the portal by Matteo da Napoli.
