 Sulmona

Sulmona is situated in Peligna’s valley. This city was the country of Ovidio, who said that Sulmona’s founder was Solino, friend of Aeneas. The city rose during Middle Age, thanks to Frederick II’s protection.

Many buildings are interesting: the Cathedral, built where once Apollo and Vesta’s temple was, and it was
dedicated to Virgin Mary first, and then to Saint Panfilo, bishop of Sulmona. The main portal, tard gothic, has in the lunette a fresco painted in 1400s attributed to Leonardo di Teramo.

Inside, we can admire the sarcophagus by Bartolomeo de Petrinis made in 1400s; in the crypt there is a relief made in the XII century which represents Virgin Mary in throne with Child.
In SS: Annunziata square is the monumental Complex of Annunziata: the left portal is gothic, the others are renaissance. Palace of Annunziata is the seat of the Civic Museum. Annunziata’s church is a reconstruction made in the 1700s.

Very scenographic is the aqueduct built in the XIII century, constituted by 21 gothic arcades. In this town there are other two important churches: San Francesco della Scarpa and Santa Maria della Tomba, XV century.
